v Partick Thistle

Post by LangToun Loon » Sat Feb 18, 2006 5:24 pm

A gutsy performance today from the lads and they were worth the 3 points. Surprised to see Shand out on the right wing – he doesn’t have the pace really. Mathers had another fine game with a few important stops and it didn’t really matter which way he went for the penalty, Roberts sent it high over the bar! Nicol looks to have settled in well and took his goal well and Woody had a simple tap in from a fine cross from Bobby Linn. I thought Bobby was unlucky not to get on the score sheet and it took a fine save from Kenny Arthur to deny him later in the 2nd half. Undefeated against the Thistle this season!

Stirling winning against Morton hasn’t helped but we shouldn’t look to others to do us any favours. Everyone put in 100% today, let’s have more of the same next weekend.

Good to hear about the performance today. Have to say bit gutted that Stirling got a result today, but as long as we keep getting the results who cares. 8)

Excellent result, the lads played really well some great passing if sometimes a bit over elabourate. Agree that Calvin Shand seemed a bit lost at times and putting Bav on seemed the right thing to do, we have to remember that these players have had lenthy spells out so will take some time to get back to match speed. Another fine game from Jamie at the back but more importantly a fine team effort. It was comforting to hear the Thistle support moaning at the officials towards the end as i thought two of them normally just gave us nothing. Both goals very well worked with Kevins finish very well executed. We need to keep this standard up if we can we will certainly win more games than not.

Although we are continuing to punch above our weight as proved with another win against a fulltime team yesterday I can't help thinking that we will be lucky to hang on to fourth position.
Realistically we are having a very good season considering that teams such as Gretna,Morton and Partick happen to be in the league this year.
Against a pacy and inventive Partick it was interesting to see Shand line up in a more advanced position on the right but as it turned out this was quite a good idea by Stewart as it provided double cover against some fast raids down that flank.
Still not convinced by Buchan in defence - he certainly can read the game and his distribution is excellent but his tackling can be suspect and we are still troubled by the high ball.We also miss his inventive play and pace further forward as was shown by one surging run later in the game.
Wood and Linn put in a really good shift with Wood displaying some skills that I doubted he had earlier in the season and Linn proving what a handfull he can be when he is fully focused.
It was understandable that players such as Nicol and Shand would tire towards the end but Gibson put in a powerful display in the centre of midfield and of course Mathers showed once again that he must be rated one of the finest keepers in the lower leagues.
So well done to the players but lets not get too carried away as a couple of poor results could see our position slip and we must avoid any knee jerk reaction of unfair criticism of players/manager in what is such a tight middle section of the league.

Crowd down by 200 on Saturday compared to the first time we played Partick Thistle earlier this season. What has the team to do to attract the fans back? They are playing some of the best football to be seen at Balmoor and deserve more support than this. Anyone got any ideas as to how to entice punters to Balmoor?
