Betfred Cup 2018

Post by Nev » Sat Jul 14, 2018 2:14 pm

Kicks off today against Brechin, before facing Dunfermline away (again!) and then Stirling and Dundee at home.

Thoughts on chances of qualification?

Fairly good result at Brechin where we normally lose. If we can avoid defeat at Dunfermline we might have a chance of progressing with a win against Stirling Albion and a draw against Dundee.

Had chances to win the game but in general played ok & still have options player wise that have not featured yet. Won the bonus point with a 5-4 win on penalties. Not sure about qualifying but looks as if we will battle for points which will stand us in good stead when the league gets going.

Away to Dunfermline
Thought Dunfermline looked like they should, a full time championship team who passed the ball around well & had good movement off the ball, we had too many players that were happy to stand & watch this happening. The only way we were going to get something from this was by working really hard to unsettle them, that did not happen. Was disappointed in our showing last night as we rarely put them on the back foot. We had a good 10 mins late on but then gave away a needless penalty & was punished further when they scored again when I thought our player was pushed in the lead up to it. Hopefully lessons will be learnt & we can start to build some positive momentum.

Highlights from the Dunfermline game for anyone who hasn't seen us yet.

Abysmal, disgraceful beat before they started and when they finished. Some just not good enough and some not interested and stealing a wage. At least with HL teams there’s commitment !!!🤬🤬🤬

Very disappointing again unless we start improving very quickly teams will be looking forward to visiting Balmoor again this season. Presume Kavanah was meant to be supporting Rory up front but very little came from that. Scott Brown going off meant the chance of someone driving on from midfield disappeared. With Jamie playing on the wrong side for him we lost a lot of our width going forward. Norris did ok when coming on & Lyle can be excused as it was his first game time. If we are thinking of doing anything in the league we need a big improvement.

Trying to be a bit forgiving as it's still early days but this was game number five not number one and we were so far off the pace today.

Passes going astray, shots going nowhere, miscontrol of the ball and we even managed to mess up a throw in.

Not to mention zero goals scored against league teams and with only one game left before the serious stuff starts we look like we have a long way to go yet.

Just have to hope we can get it all together quickly.

An ominous start to the season but it can only get better - can't it!?

To be fair we looked more organised and in better shape against Dundee although it was always going to be an uphill battle against a full time Premier team.

The most worrying thing though is that we have still to score a single goal this season apart from the meaningless Broch / Locos games.

Can't remember a start like that before.

We need to get some goals and some confidence quickly or we might not recover.

And we need to get Boyle fit because Jamie is NOT a left back or any kind of back for that matter.

Think that when Lyle is up to speed and Rory is fully fit, the two will work well together. Boyle and Dunlop still to come in will let Jason go to right back where he is most effective. Remember Gary Bollan saying last year that he thought Jason was the best right back in the league. Agree that Jamie needs to be further up the park rather than having to bomb up from the back. Some of the goals he scored last season were magnificent, eg against Elgin, and although he will play anywhere to fill a gap, he needs to be at the sharp end of things. Gives 100% every time he pulls on the shirt.
Having a poor League cup is not ideal but its the league that matters and just put the cup down to a tough pre-season. When the joke that is the Irn Bru cup comes around on the 14th August, we have another chance to beat Brechin.

Not to put too fine a point on it but why aren't these players fit and playing? I hope we haven't signed a bunch of duds yet again. The league starts in a week and we can't afford a slow start.

Boyle got taken out at the Broch & has not played since but will hopefully be back shortly, Dunlop I think needs a injection in his foot at the start of most seasons but has usually done the business in this league

Fair enough, I had forgotten about Boyle. Hopefully we do the business next Saturday with whoever we have available.

Rory’s struggling with an ankle knock but Jim hopes he’ll be fit for next Saturday. Lyle has been building up after a calf injury but should be ready to start v Queen’s Park.
